Celebrate Originality

This has to be one of the most ridiculous ads floating around in cyberspace at the moment. I'd heard that Adidas were launching a Star Wars line but I had no idea how they were going to market it. Not only does the video feature both David Beckham and Snoop, but Vader himself even makes a cameo. Oh sorry - SPOILER ALERT! Why anyone thought it was a good idea to couple a prestigious sports brand with a movie that has a huge nerd following is beyond me. If you hadn't already noticed we don't really do sports.

The ad opens with a shot of a dark silhouette holding a flare and then swiftly cuts to an Asian woman looking as confused as we are as to what we are witnessing here. That oh so familiar score then sweeps in and the viewer is greeted with a sort of playground acid trip - the girl on the merry-go-round looks particularly baked, as she rides that thing with a creepy, euphoric look in her peepers. After that there's some slow mo footage of some shoes running up a flight of stairs, but then swooshing noises and crap CG spaceships remind us that this has some relevance to Star Wars... If that wasn't exciting enough we then get a first person view of some shoes on a swing, but of course it all makes sense when an X-Wing flies past. Doesn't it? What the...

To spice things up an 'urban' looking chap decides to swing a baseball bat that sounds like a lightsaber and for some reason this creates a fire. Poor old David Beckham gets so confused he actually shits himself. The guy has enough on his plate what with the awful beard and so in an effort to lighten the mood a rad DJ spins a phat mix of the Star Wars theme, but then SHIT! Who invited Snoop?

Vader sees that all this hooliganism has to come to an end and walks through some red smoke to illustrate his disapproval. Oh yeah and that breathy noise kinda goes in time with the music so that makes it cool. No? Me neither. And what's with the shitty tagline celebrate originality? More like celebrate George Lucas's jiz on your scutty new pair of trainers.
