No love for the buzz

Why Google needs to release a social networking tool is beyond me. I've used everything from Facebook to Bebo and I think it's time we said enough is enough. Each day people log into sites like Facebook and compulsively and tell the world mundane things that no one gives a toss about. Bradley can't wait to get pissed. Sophie loves Ben & Jerrys. It's all bollocks for Christ's sake! Social networking has become this sort of weird daily ritual, a cultural necessity that only vaguely detracts from our mundane lives. The worst part of it is, despite what the name suggests, you rarely build any new relationships over the internet. They are more like protofriends, hypotheticals, if I did see you in real life I'd probably shuffle away to avoid embarrassment. The people you spend most of your time chatting to are people you already know anyway, so you might ask yourself why bother?

Getting back on topic Google Buzz seems to yet another pointless addition to the boredom ensemble, boasting features which rather than create 'buzz' provoke long drawn out sighs and mild shoulder shrugs. The fact that it's integrated directly into the gmail service is a mild perk at best as it only takes seconds to create a Facebook or Twitter account anyway. BBC News says the service includes the ability to 'post status updates, share content and read and comment on friends' posts'. Oooh that's interesting! NOT. Sorry if I'm being pedantic here but how can any of this excite anyone? It's just stuff I can do already without having to gawk at the bland Google interface. Gmail is fine as it is, it serves its intended purpose well; what we don't need is stupid notifications a la Facebook jizzing up the side of our inboxes! It's just common sense.
